The centre employs a staff of approximately 50 persons, divided into various research and staff functions.

Research and development work is undertaken by the 2 research units: Unit for violence and trauma – Children, and Unit for violence and trauma – Adults.
In addition, the centre has separate staff for dissemination work, research support and finance/administration/personnel management.

NKVTS was established on 1 January 2004, and is a subsidiary of UNIRAND AS, which in turn is wholly owned by the University of Oslo.

The board comprises seven members with personal deputies.

The Ministry of Health and Care Services, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion, the Ministry of Justice and the Police and the Ministry of Children and Equality initiated the establishment of NKVTS and are also the main funders of its operations.

Other parties may also commission research assignments on an ad-hoc basis. The centre will assess such assignments individually on the basis of its existing skills base and current capacity.
